Freedom at last: Sanjay Dutt released from Yerawada

CNN CORRESPONDENT

It's freedom at last for Sanjay Dutt. The actor, convicted in the 1993 Bombay blasts case, walked out of Pune's Yerawada jail early Thursday morning, two days after the Supreme Court granted him bail.

Family and friends were relieved after Dutt's release. CNN-IBN spoke to Ajay Marwah, a close family friend. He said the bail is a respite and now he can concentrate on his work for some time.

"Yea this a respite for Sanjay. Now he can focus on his work. I have seen him for over a decade and he has taken it all very well. He has become a wonderful person after having gone through all this. He's shining like a diamond. His family too is strong and have taken it all in their stride," said Marwah.

A beaming Dutt was seen coming out of jail with Yusuf Nulwala who was also granted bail by the Supreme Court. Dutt had to spend two nights in jail despite the Apex Court sending the bail orders via e-mail and fax.

The bail papers had to be brought to the jail authorities from the TADA court in Mumbai. Dutt had to furnish a bail amount of Rs 5 lakh.

The bail papers had to be physically brought from the Special TADA court in Mumbai to Pune's Yerawada Jail. Earlier the Supreme Court had granted him bail in the 1993 Bombay blasts case.

Under normal legal procedure, a judgement copy has to be delivered to a convict almost immediately after the judgement is passed so as to enable the convict to appeal to a higher court.

But clearly that is not the case for thousands of convicts across the state who are still waiting for their fair chance to appeal to a higher court. In this case Dutt has been the lucky one and by way of him, many others.

It is these nameless convicts who stand to benefit from the actions of the apex court. Thousands of prisoners languish behind bars because copies of their bail documents or release orders do not reach concerned authorities in time.

As for Dutt, the irony remains that in spite of his bail order coming quickly, he may still have to spend the night in jail as the hard copy of his release order from the TADA Court still hasn't reached the Yerawada Jail authorities.

R U WEARING GEMS OR STONES, THINK AGAIN?????

(The gems related quotations from the Puranas given are courtesy Mr. Richard Brown, the famous gemologist)

This gemstone remedy amuses and interests me. I am a professional astrologer, practicing and studying for the past 25 years. I learned Vedic astrology studying the various Sashtras and got further guidance from my relative Mr. K. N. Rao, the famous astrologer. To this day I have not found a single Astrology Sashtra, which prescribes gems as a "remedy" for anything - from Parashara in 3000BC to Ramadayalu in 19th century AD!! So based on what are we supposed to prescribe gems as "remedies"? A book known as "Mani Mala" by S. M. Tagore, written in 1879 is quoted by many, but it is not an accepted classic of astrology.

I am not against gems or gemologists. Gems are beautiful and the gemologists are the gem experts. I have bought various gems for my wife and I am happy with their beauty and with the gemologist who gave them. But I am dead against the fraudulent astrologers who know nothing about remedies but prescribe several stones to make money. Gems are prescribed in several Vedic astrology scriptures for keeping in the Pooja of various planets. They are also prescribed as a Dana in various astrological remedies. They are also used in several Ayurvedic preparations. However Vedic astrology scriptures have not prescribed the wearing of gems as a remedy anywhere. The Brihat Parasara Horasastra by Rishi Parasara prescribes a lot of remedies but doesn't prescribe wearing of gems as remedy. The same with the other authentic Vedic astrology scriptures written by other sages like Jaimini, Garga, Varahamihira etc. These highly evolved Rishis knew all the scriptures like the Vedas and Puranas, but ignored the gems as a remedy and prescribed only Poojas and recital of mantras and Stotras plus Dana.

BEWARE OF THESE BANKS

Looking at the rising complaints against ICICI Bank, SBI Cards, and ABN Amro Bank, we request consumers to properly read their documents and keep a record when dealing with these banks, especially regarding credit card and housing loan. These banks are biggest defaulters and do not resolve consumer problems easily. Be aware of their terms in writing. Keep a perfect record of all correspondence with them. If they do not agree to written communication, immediately stop their services.

If any bank does not send you credit card statements in time, immediately close the account and terminate their services, as you will get a shock of your life when suddenly huge amounts are billed to you and fines are levied upon your account for non-payment of dues due to non-availability of account statements. ICICI Bank and Citibank is very famous for such extortions. They do not send account statements, and then charge fine/late fee when you fail to pay. Do not believe them verbally, they change their words late on and deny their verbal statements.

ICICI Bank has issued credit card to a person who expired 12 years ago !! This card was misused and the statement was sent to his alive son for payment of Rs. 36,000.

Shhhh... No Nandigram talk in House, say Left

SUBMITTED BY : RAHUL SINGH (CNN NEWS)

The Left parties are hell-bent on having a detailed debate on the nuclear deal in Parliament, but when it comes to Nandigram, they seem to have other standards.

As the Winter Session of Parliament opened on Thursday with clear indications that the Opposition BJP will disrupt proceedings over the Nandigram issue, the Left have put their foot down, saying it is a state issue and they will not allow any Parliament debate on the same.

After a meeting of four Left parties, the leaders maintained on Thursday that Nandigram issue was a 'state law and order subject" which could not be discussed in Parliament as rules did not permit such matters to be raised.

"Parliament functions according to rules. Whatever the rules permit, can be discussed. Nandigram can be discussed in the West Bengal Assembly, but not in Parliament," CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta told a joint press conference with other Left leaders, including his party colleague D Raja and CPI(M)'s Sitaram Yechury, Basudeb Acharia and Rupchand Pal.

Recalling the police firing on Nandigram agitators on March 14 when a demand for debate was made by Leader of Opposition LK Advani, Acharia said Deputy Speaker CS Atwal had then ruled that it could not be discussed as it was a state subject. "That ruling still stands," he said.

Rani pays Rs 33 lakh for land, but never gets it

SUBMITTED BY: RAHUL TANEJA(RAAGA ENTERTAINMENT NEWS)

Actor Rani Mukherjee may have sold the Taj Mahal in a movie, but in real life, she might have been duped in a land deal.

The actor had reportedly paid Rs 33 lakh in December 2005 for a non-transferable farmland near Shirdi in Maharashtra.

After the purchase, Rani is said to have paid a stamp duty of Rs 1.32 lakh for registration in the district tehsildar office, but the ownership of the land could not be transferred to her name because the tehsildar said it was government land leased out to a farmer. Now the deal has been scrapped by the district collector.

The farmer Sampat More is now apparently willing to return the money to Rani. The land was purchased in the name of Rani's father Ram Mukherjee.

The actor, who was aware that it was agricultural land, has not come forward to lodge any complaints so far.

The Government of Maharashtra has certain procedures where non-farmers are allowed to buy agricultural land and it is believed that Rani’s father had agreed to follow the law of the land.

Seventeen other people in the area have been duped in land cases in a similar manner.

SUBMITTED BY: VIJAY ANAND ''CRIME REPORTER''( NEW DELHI MEDIA SERVICES)

There has been another incident of road rage in the Capital. Motorists on Sunday beat up a brother and sister duo following an arguement over eve teasing in West Delhi.

Two men assaulted Akansha and her brother and their car was smashed when her brother tried to protect her from eve-teasers.

A case of eve teasing, beating and threatening has been registered against the two boys. But no arrests have been made so far.

Incidents of road rage have been on the rise in the city, despite the fact that the Delhi government held a special meeting to discuss the issue in October.

Sources had said that the government had decided it would go ahead and permanently cancel the driving licences of road rage offenders.

SUBMITTED BY: Rahul kumar (deccan news services)

A car driven by a Canadian model with Bollywood actor Salman Khan in it met with an accident injuring a police constable in Mumbai.

The car with Salman in it hit the motorcycle on which a police constable was riding pillion and injured the latter. The incident took place in central Mumbai's Worli area.

"Going by the photographs (printed in a city tabloid today) it seems Salman was in the vehicle which met with an accident but my men at Worli have said he was not driving the vehicle as being speculated," PTI quoted Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) K L Prasad as saying.

A crowd gathered at the spot soon after and one among them also clicked photographs of Salman at the spot with his mobile phone, PTI reports.

Symington: I saw a UFO (udantastri) in the Arizona sky

video is for demonstration

In 1997, during my second term as governor of Arizona, I saw something that defied logic and challenged my reality.

I witnessed a massive delta-shaped, craft silently navigate over Squaw Peak, a mountain range in Phoenix, Arizona. It was truly breathtaking. I was absolutely stunned because I was turning to the west looking for the distant Phoenix Lights.

To my astonishment this apparition appeared; this dramatically large, very distinctive leading edge with some enormous lights was traveling through the Arizona sky.

As a pilot and a former Air Force Officer, I can definitively say that this craft did not resemble any man-made object I'd ever seen. And it was certainly not high-altitude flares because flares don't fly in formation.

The incident was witnessed by hundreds -- if not thousands -- of people in Arizona, and my office was besieged with phone calls from very concerned Arizonians. The growing hysteria intensified when the story broke nationally. I decided to lighten the mood of the state by calling a press conference where my chief of staff arrived in an alien costume. We managed to lessen the sense of panic but, at the same time, upset many of my constituents.

Beware! Your Diwali sweet may be adulterated

COLLECTED BY: RISHI KAPOOR

Sweets are an integral part of Diwali celebrations. They make your mouth water but what you now need to be on guard as they could be made out of adulterated milk.

So as a customer how can you really ensure that the pedha or burfi you pick up is unadulterated and of the purest form?

"It could generally be in the colour they use or the mava they may use. The foremost thing you can do is buy only from a genuine shop and also understand that someone who may be giving you something cheaper might only mean that he is using cheaper products,” says owner, Aswaad Sweets, Dadar.

“We should buy sweets only from genuine places,” says a customer.

So the trick is to purchase sweets from a reputed shop or buy ones that are less colourful. And it is also important to keep in mind that the product should be sampled to ensure it doesn't have inferior oil or dalda.

Fan reveals number, Shilpa's phone won't stop ringing

submitted by : rajat kapoor

Actress Shilpa Shetty was swamped with hundreds of calls after a fan got hold of her private number and sent it out in a mass e-mail, forcing her to file a police complaint, her publicist said on Tuesday.

The complaint asks police to trace the fan, said Shetty's publicist Dale Bhagwagar. Currently in Britain performing a musical titled Miss Bollywood, the actress was ''extremely perturbed'' her number was known to hundreds of people who called or sent her SMS messages, he said.

''Some want to date her, some want to just listen to her voice, some want to inquire if her musical 'Miss Bollywood' is doing fine and some call just to check if they are speaking to the real Shilpa Shetty,'' Bhagwagar said, adding that the actress has stopped using the number.

Mumbai police were investigating the incident, said police officer Sushil Joshi, adding that the fan could face a six-month jail term for harassment and illegally using the Internet to publicize a private phone number.

Dhoni to be Test captain after Sachin says no

COLLECTED BY: RISHI KAPOOR

Two days before the selectors were to announce India’s new Test captain after Rahul Dravid’s resignation, Sachin Tendulkar has pulled out of the race.

Tendulkar has cited personal reasons and has met the board of selectors to convey his decision behind declining to lead the Test team. He was the top contender for the post.

“I don’t feel right about it at the moment,” Tendulkar told CNN-IBN’s Editor in Chief Rajdeep Sardesai.

On October 27, CNN-IBN had learnt that Tendulkar had reportedly agreed to take over the Test captaincy. He was to be the captain for the next 10 Test matches — three against Pakistan, four against Australia in Australia and three against South Africa at home — until April 2008.

Sources told CNN-IBN that Sachin spoke to the selectors and stated his reluctance to become the captain for a third time. The post of Indian captain has been vacant now for about seven weeks since Rahul Dravid stepped down after India’s tour of England.

Tendulkar had been Dravid’s deputy during the Test series in Bangladesh and England. However, the batsman did an about turn on his decision in a letter to BCCI President Sharad Pawar, saying that the selection policies are not just, and the seniors have not been treated properly, hinting at Dravid’s exclusion from the One-Day side.

BCCI sources say that Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India’s One-Day and Twenty20 captain, will take over the Test side as well, although Anil Kumble could also be discussed when the selectors meet on Thursday at Mohali during the second ODI against Pakistan.

Tendulkar's refusal has put the selectors in a tight spot – they are now left without a senior player to captain the Test side, while former cricketers like Ravi Shastri feel that ODI captain Dhoni is not ready for Test captaincy yet.

The selectors are due to meet on November 8 at Mohali to announce the team for the remaining three One-Dayers against Pakistan, along with naming the new Test captain.

EMERGENCY IN PAK, CJ DETAINED

COLLECTED BY: RISHI KAPOOR

Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf on Saturday evening imposed emergency in the country amid rising militant violence.

Dawn news reports that the Army has entered the Supreme Court in Islamabad and has detained Chief Justice Ifthekar Choudhry.

Private television channels are off air in Islamabad. Reports say barriers and barbed wires have come up at important points in Islamabad.

Pakistan Television said Musharraf, who is also chief of army staff, had issued a provisional constitutional order declaring an emergency. Musharraf, who seized power in a 1999 coup, is awaiting a Supreme Court ruling on whether he was eligible to run for re-election last month while still army chief.

Army pickets have also sprung up in Peshawar, the capital of North-West Frontier Province that borders Afghanistan.

A senior security official told Reuters that Musharraf would seek approval for the move from the cabinet later, after which there were expectations he would address the nation. The cabinet was due to start meeting at 7 pm (1400 GMT).

Sung by criticism it was adding to a sense of instability, the Supreme Court said on Friday it would reconvene on Monday and try to finish the case quickly, having earlier said it would take a break until November 12 -- just three days before Musharraf's current term is due to expire.

Earlier Attorney General Malik Qayyum told the court that there was no move by the government to impose martial law.

TV journalists beaten up by Bihar MLA's men

In a bizarre incident that perhaps best reflects the rampant lawlessness in Bihar, a ruling Janata Dal United legislator beat up three television journalists on Thursday.

MLA Anant Singh and four of his supporters have been arrested for beating NDTV reporter Prakash Singh, cameraperson Habib Ali and ANI correspondent Ajay Kumar.

The journalists were shooting for a crime story in which the MLA is a suspect.

A group of 25 people allegedly beat them up and snatched their camera, mobile phones and watches.

“We had taken the MLA's name, that is why they all got together to beat us. We were kept for two hours and we just had a narrow escape,” said Prakash Singh

Added Ali, “There were about 20-25 people beating us. I have fractured my elbow, and they even broke my camera, mobile and the watch.”

The JD(U) and the Opposition RJD have strongly condemned the incident. The RJD has even called for a bandh in the state on Friday.

“Anant Singh should be arrested as soon as possible. Lot of cases are pending against him. If this is the way Nitish Kumar government is going to run, then it could be a problematic situation for Bihar to run,” said RJD MLA Sakeel Ahmed.

Former chief minister and RJD leader Rabri Devi was quick to grab the opportunity criticise Nitish Kumar's government.

"We will meet the Governer today and will write letters to PM, Home Minister telling them everything. Reporters are always attacked in Bihar. Is this law? Tomorrow a bandh will be observed in Bihar," she said.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said he was recommending a CBI inquiry into the murder in which Anant Singh is a suspect.

"I read news reports about the murder case and now I got to hear that NDTV reporters were beaten up outside an MLA's house. I told the DGP and he will probe into it," he said.
