Guess Who’s Shopping: Royal Edition

These days, going shopping doesn’t feel particularly glamorous, what with the all the markdown mayhem. But Bergdorf Goodman reportedly got an injection of elegance earlier today in the form of H.R.H. Queen Rania, who was spotted entering the 57th Street store. We somehow have a hard time envisioning the royal Jordanian beauty rifling through jumbled sale racks, so we’re going to assume she’s buying full-price. At least someone should be

Shivraj Patil quits, Vilasrao Deshmukh next

New Delhi: In the wake of Mumbai terror strikes, Union Home Shivraj Patil accepted 'moral responsibility' and sent his resignation to Prime Minister of Manmohan Singh on Sunday.

Party sources have confirmed that his resignation has been accepted and added that Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh could be next to be asked to step down.

There have been several terror attacks in the past, but due to the nature of Mumbai attacks and the fact that it is an election season, someone needed to take responsibility, party sources said.

There is speculation that Finance Minister P Chidambaram and External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee are the top contenders for Patil’s post.

Patil offered to quit after Congress Working Committee (CWC) members expressed their dissatisfaction with the Home Ministry in the wake of Mumbai terror strikes, at a meeting held late on Saturday.

Patil told the meeting that as the Home minister he "takes the responsibility and whatever the CWC decides, I am ready to do", party sources said.

Patil's remarks suggested that he was ready to step down came in the wake of criticism by several leaders including union ministers over the way the internal security situation was being handled at the Central level, the sources added.

Sources say that CWC members came down heavily on Patil and Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh for their failure.

UPA chief Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh are believed to have pulled up Patil for the monumental intelligence failure in Mumbai terror strike case.

It is said that Patil's ministry failed to take cognisance of a serious input from intelligence about the impending attack long before terrorists struck Mumbai on Wednesday night, November 26.

HEADS WILL ROLL

Besides Patil, Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, who was also present at the meeting, came under attack on the terror strikes issue, CWC sources said.

The leaders who voiced criticism on the issue included union ministers P Chidambaram, Kamal Nath, Kapil Sibal and H R Bhardwaj, they said.

The refrain of these leaders at the meeting was that strong action is needed in the wake of the Mumbai terror strikes and accountability has to be ensured at the higher as well as lower levels.

This prompted Pranab Mukherjee to remark that since it was collective responsibility of the Cabinet, he would also like to take responsibility as the External Affairs Minister.

Maharashtra Chief Minister, however, chose to ignore the criticism and instead apprised the meeting of the steps taken by his government in the wake of terror strikes, they said.

The Home Minister as also National Security Adviser M K Narayanan came under attack at the CWC meeting called hours after the security operations against the terrorists was indication enough that the leadership was planning some strong steps.

Chandrayaan mission: Big leap for India

New Delhi: After nine years of hard work, the countdown for Chandrayaan-1 – India's first unmanned moon mission – has begun at the Sriharikota space station. The launch is scheduled for early Wednesday morning.

Chandrayaan-1 will orbit the moon for about two years, mapping the topography and mineral content of the lunar soil. It will take off from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, about 80 km from Chennai, and off the Bay of Bengal.

The Chandrayaan-1 launch would be around 0620 hrs IST on October 22, weather conditions permitting.

Ninety-nine per cent of the integration and testing is complete and the countdown has begun for India's historic tryst with the moon.

The success of Chandrayaan-1 will catapult India among the top five space exploring countries of the world.

Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Dr G Madhavan Nair said, “It has been a dream of Indian scientists to send satellites around the moon and collect data about its surface features, minerals and so on.”

Experts said that just getting the satellite right isn't enough. A huge ground network is needed to monitor and control it. So 30 kilometres outside Bangalore, ISRO built this tracking station.

Director of ISRO Satellite Centre, TK Alex said, “We have to make sure that the trajectory is correct. Moon must be exactly where we decided it should be when we designed the satellite.”

While Indians designed and built everything on this mission – they weren't averse to letting others hitch a ride. There are 11 different machines on board this mission – five from India, four from Europe and two from NASA.

On Wednesday morning, nine years of hard work will be put to the test. If successful, the Chandrayaan-1 mission will be a clear statement that sky is not the limit for India anymore.

MNS workers allegedly attack Railway exam centres

FRESH NEWS

New Delhi: A group of alleged MNS (Marashtra Navnirman Sena) activists beat up candidates of the Railway recruitment exam in ICL school at Vashi. Several centres at Vashi including Bhandup, Thane are being targeted.

However, as soon as the police reached the spot, the mob fled. There have reports of three candidates being injured at the Kalyan centre

Reportedly, the Raj Thackeray-led party is targetting non-Maharashtrians candidates vying for the railway jobs. Non-Maharashtrian candidates at Dombivali's Tilak college attacked

Eight activists have been detained and the exam has been cancelled as preventive action at the Kasturba Marg police station, Borivali.

MNS' agenda for the violence is to give priority to Maharahstrians in government railway jobs.

Meanwhile, political parties across the board are demanding stronger action against the MNS.

"The attack on Indians by MNS has over the past months. It is unfortunate that the state government is not acting against the miscreants, led by Raj," RJD's Ram Kripal Yadav.

Tendulkar breaks Lara's records of most Test runs

BREAKING NEWS

New Delhi: Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar is now the highest run-getter in the history of Test cricket.

The Little Master broke retired West Indies batsman Brian Charles Lara's record of 11,953 runs in the second Test against Australia at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali on Friday when he went past the 15-run mark in the first innings.

When the match began, Tendulkar needed 15 runs to surpass Lara's record and overtook the West Indian legend it when he took three runs after gliding the first ball after the tea break towards third man off rookie pacer Peter Siddle.

He walked in to bat after India lost the wicket of former skipper Rahul Dravid with the scorecard reading 146/2and reached the landmark in the company of another former India skipper Sourav Ganguly.

Australian skipper Ricky Ponting was among the first players to shake hands with Tendulkar after he claimed the record.

However, Siddle had the last laugh he got Tendulkar to edge a ball outside the off stump into the safe hands of Matthew Hayden in the slips to end the Little Masters vigil in the middle for 88 runs.

While Tendulkar took 152 matches and 247 innings to reach the landmark, Lara accumulated the runs in 131 matches and 232 innings.

His highest score of 248 came in 2004 against Bangladesh and he has four double centuries, including 241 against Australia in 2004.

Lara retired from international cricket after the 2007 World Cup and had scored 34 centuries and 48 half-centuries and had been Test's leading scorer since 2005. He scored made his 11,953 Test runs at an average of 52.88.

However, Lara holds an edge over Tendulkar when it comes to the most runs in a Test innings. The West Indies legend scored world-record 400 against England in 2004 and reclaimed the record from Hayden, whose best is 380.

Lara had scored 375 against the same team almost 10 years earlier. He erased former Australia skipper Allan Border's (11,174 runs) name as the batsman with most Test runs in Adelaide in November 2005.

Tendulkar already holds the world record of most Test centuries with 39 tons under his belt. He has also 42 One-Day Internationals centuries for a total of 81 international hundreds, which again is a world record.

The 35-year-old batsman also has 49 half-centuries in Tests and 89 in ODIs.

He also hold the record scoring maximum ODIs runs and is the only batsman to have accumulated more than 15,000 runs in the 50-over format. Currently Tendulkar has ODIs 16,361 runs against his name from 417 matches.

Tendulkar made his India debut in 1989 against Pakistan at Karachi and since then has scored at an average of 54.02.

Patel refutes Goyal claim, says he asked Jet to act

BREAKING NEWS

New Delhi: Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel has said that he called up Jet Airways Chairman Naresh Goyal on Thursday and told him to find a resolution to the lay-off issue.

"I called the Chairman of Jet Airways Naresh Goyal yesterday morning to meet me in Hyderabad. After meeting me yesterday morning he had assured me and I had also told him that in 24 hours we must find a resolution to this problem, otherwise we in the ministry would certainly not be very happy with the approach of Jet Airways. I am sure wisdom prevailed and he has taken the right decision," Parful Patel said.

Patel’s statement clearly refutes Goyal’s claims that there was no political pressure on him to take back the retrenched employees.

"I am not doing it under any pressure from anybody, neither from within the management nor from the outside," Goyal had said on Thursday night while announcing that the airline was taking back all the retrenched employees.

Jet Airways had earlier announced that it would lay-off 1,900 employees out of which 850 had already been given their termination letters.

The Civil Aviation Minister said though there was a crisis in the aviation industry but the government would not come up with a bailout package.

"There is no bailout package as everybody is making it out that government is going to write a cheque of taxpayers’ money to the airlines. That has never been the case and I have never said it," he said.

Patel also clarified that no Air India employee would be laid-off.

"I want to make it clear that no Air India employee will be laid-off," he said.

Air India Director of Corporate Communications Jitendra Bhargava had on Thursday said that the airline would offer its employees leave without pay option on voluntary basis.

"Air India is initiating several measures for cost cutting one of which is introducing a scheme whereby employees of the company if they choose to do so on a purely voluntary basis, can avail of three to five years of leave," Bhargava had said

MNS takes up cudgel on behalf of jobless Jet staff

BREAKING NEWS

New Delhi: The financial crisis is taking its toll and the first to be hit in India is the aviation industry.

Jet Airways on Wednesday announced that 1,900 employees in all, including engineers, cabin crew and groundstaff would lose their jobs.

The Jet employees who lost their jobs will stage a dharna in Mumbai on Thursday.

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and the Shiv Sena are supporting the agitation by employees

MNS chief Raj Thackarey has decided to intervene on behalf of the employees of Jet Airways who were shown the door on Wednesday.

Raj said that MNS will fight for the employees who were served termination notice by Jet Airways.

"We will block all Jet Airways flights and activities of Jet if these people are not taken back. We will hold a meeting with Jet Airways personnel on Thursday and request them to reconsider their decision to lay off the employees,” Raj said after some retrenched employees met him at his residence on Wednesday.

Jet Airways laid off 850 employees most of whom were on probation and 60 employees met Raj Thackeray at his residence in Mumbai on Wednesday afternoon and sought his help.

Shiv Sena activists also assembled outside Jet House in Mumbai and shouted slogans against the domestic carrier.

However, Jet Airways Chairman Naresh Goyal insisted that job cuts are not the major issue before the airlines industry.

"We are here to protect the interest of our employees. Whatever we are is because of them. The idea is not to get rid of the people or staff but there are bigger issues to be dealt with," Goyal said and added that airlines need to be efficient.

The Jet employees claimed they got their termination letters on Tuesday and add that the letter does not mention any compensation.

Some said they were not even sent any letters, but were verbally told that their services had been terminated.

"It will hamper our career and it will hamper our future. If they (Jet) were planning to terminate us then why did they recruit us," said a female employee who lost her job.

"We don't know anything right now. We came here just for this (termination letter). They are saying that we have been terminated but why we don't know," another employee added.

Anger at the sudden dismissal was evident amongst the employees. "No one can understand how we are feeling. They destroyed everything in just a day. What do they think of themselves?" an executive said.

Her colleague echoed the sentiment. "Without any notice they have just did this. My friend messaged and she told me that we have all been terminated."

Another airline that could see job cuts is Kingfisher.

"I have laid off staff. They (Jet Airways) have also laid off staff. We need to be efficient and cut the costs and will do whatever it takes," Kingfisher Chairman Vijay Mallya said.

AI to offer leave without pay option to 15,000 staff

BREAKING NEWS

New Delhi: The global financial crisis may force state-owned Air India to downsize.

Air India Chairman Raghu Menon said the airline is considering three-five years of leave without pay for up to 15,000 employees.

"We are planning to offer leave without pay for three to five years. We can consider it for about 15,000 employees," Menon was quoted as saying by PTI.

Menon added that those who take up the offer would be taken back, if they so desire, at the same seniority and last drawn pay.

Air India Director of Corporate Communications Jeetendra Bhargava said the leave without pay option will be given on a purely voluntary basis.

"Air India is initiating several measures for cost cutting one of which is introducing a scheme whereby employees of the company if they choose to do so on a purely voluntary basis can avail of three to five years of leave," Bhargava said.

Air India management has said that the leave without pay scheme for employees has been in discussion for the past few months, the sources added.

An official of National Aviation Company of India Ltd, the holding company of Air India, clarified that this was not tantamount to retrenchment as was being done by Jet Airways.

But Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel on Wednesday had categorically ruled out any lay-offs in Air India.

"No...Air India is not going to have any job cuts. Certainly it (the aviation crisis) will affect the growth plans, it will affect the future employment opportunities which would have come the way of Air India in case the aviation industry was in a much better financial health," Patel said.

"But as of now I do not have the luxury to say beyond the fact that those who are working for the Air India shall continue to do so and we shall not have any issue of people being laid off," he added.

An official of Air India, who did not want to be named, said that a proposal for leave without pay could be brought before the company's Board soon.

Jobless Jet employees vow to fight back

BREAKING NEWS

New Delhi: The financial crisis is taking its toll on India's airlines industry. Jet Airways has served termination notices to more than 800 cabin crew and executives and Kingfisher, too, is likely to trim its staff strength from its present strength of 10,000 employees.

The Jet employees who had been laid off have gone on a protest against their dismissal in Mumbai and plan to meet Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray and seek his intervention.

The sacked employees claim they got their termination letters on Tuesday and add that the letter does not mention any compensation.

Some say they were not even sent any letters, but were verbally told that their services had been terminated.

"It will hamper our career and it will hamper our future. If they (Jet) were planning to terminate us then why did they recruit us," said a female employee who lost her job.

Her colleague echoed the sentiment. "Without any notice they have just did this. My friend messaged and she told me that we have all been terminated."

Jet Airways gives the pink slip to 850 employees

New Delhi: Jet Airways has laid off 850 employees and they will be given their termination notices on Wednesday.

The cut will eliminate at least seven per cent of Jet Airway's staff strength and the move comes a day after it entered into a strategic tie-up with liquor baron Vijay Mallya's Kingfisher Airlines.

Jet Chairman Naresh Goyal claims the cost of running the business has gone up by 30 per cent and what the company did what necessary to stay viable.

This is happening as aviation companies struggle to cut losses on account of the global financial crisis and high aviation turbine fuel prices.

It is the third time that the carrier has trimmed its workforce. Earlier in 2007, it had cut staff by 1,200 after it took over Air Sahara and in August this year, JetLite offered a voluntary separation scheme to over 700 employees.

However, this is the first time that the axe is falling on Jet Airways employees directly.

Sources say Kingfisher, which has about 10,000 employees, is also likely to lay off staff.

There's been a slowdown in both domestic and international air traffic on account of the downturn and the Indian domestic airline sector is staring at losses of over Rs 4000 crore.

Driver loses track: Train leaves for Bihar, reaches UP

Lucknow: You must have heard people getting strayed, but in a bizarre incident, a Bihar bound train today diverted from its route and reached Allahabad city of Uttar Pradesh.

The special train, en route from Delhi to Darbhanga in Bihar, surprisingly changed its route and headed for Allahabad.

The irresponsible act has, however, left the railway officials 'jittery' and 'speechless'.

The Pooja special train 4006 B had left the Delhi railway station for Bihar late last night and had to traverse through Kanpur, Lucknow and Gonda.

However, when the train started heading towards the other city, the passengers pulled the chain near Sarsol station.

Later, after much commotion, the train returned to Kanpur central station, from where it proceeded for Bihar.

The railway officials were, however, tightlipped on the matter.

And while the guard of the train blames the administration for wrongly briefing him and the driver, passengers say that it was entirely the guard's fault.

“We were instructed to take the train to Allahabad. It was on papers as well so we followed the instructions,” the train’s guard, G S Dubey, says.

“When I started from Kanpur, I saw the train was on the wrong track, so I called up Railway Enquiry. The train halted but they did not know the next course of action. The guard and the driver were referring to the train number as 4006A while actually the number was 4006B, and it was very clearly mentioned on the papers the guard was carrying,” a passenger said.

Complaint against HDFC - Fraudlent trasfer of fund from saving a/c. -Gurdeep Singh

A LETTER FROM OUR READER :
* all information provided by our reader , blog team is not responsible for any legal action.

Dear Editor,

I would like to bring in notice the fraudulent dealings happened with my HDFC saving bank account because of lacuna in the system process of HDFC bank.

In the month of October ( 04th October, 2008 ), the culprit party ( who has hacked my IDs ) has done some modification in the beneficiary details, by adding up his own accounts in front of the name of old beneficiary in the list, and the procedure is that bank is taking 24 hours for upgrading the same into the user net banking services, after cross verification of bank account and the beneficiary name at their own end, but it was not happpend in my case and the cross verification has not been done by the banks personals through their system.

On 05th October, 2008 ( Sunday ), I came to know through a mail message that my account has been debited by 73,500/-, and I was shocked by that alert message from HDFC, as I haven’t done such transfer neither I knew the beneficiary directly or indirectly nor there is any reason to transfer the funds into his account.

Then, in the afternoon, I called up customer care cell, and they confirmed me that it’s a fraud dealing and that culprit party has already done this sort of dealing with another customers accounts as well, and they are well aware of the fact and already blocked the account of that culprit party before my call, and on the basis of my request they have freezed my account as well for any further mis-utilization of my account with them. And the cutomer care representative ( named Ms. Rashmi Gupta - designated as Senior sales manager ) confirmed me the complaint no. (R322300121 ) and I will be getting the final response against my query masximum, and meanwhile I have also got the acknowledgement against my mail marked to them at supports@hdfcbank.com ( ack. No. : 006-034-935 ), and against her commitment I have got a response from her that “ Sir we have got the confirmation from our Head Office , and your money will get re-imburse as soon as we recover the same from defaulter “.

I have also submitted a written complaint at New friends Branch - HDFC Bank on 6th October, 2008 Monday at around 1-2 PM , to Mr. Shubhashish Ghosh ( Manager – operation ) and I have Escalated the matter to the Branch Manager as well ( Named Mr. Sanjay Berry - contact no. 9313061402 ), who ensured me that “ my money will get refunded into my account definitely –by Monday -Tuesday evening” .I would also like to add that this not only happened to my account but same fraudulent activity happened in many other customers of HDFC .All though they have managed to freezed the account of the Culprit but the damaged was already done in my account on sunday morning itself, but till now i haven't got any positive fruitful response from their side, regarding retreiving my funds into my saving account..

" I am running from pillar to post but all in waste, there is no appropriate action nor my money is been credited back."

“ Hence, it is a fault of banker personal and lack in system itself, and the amount must get refund to my account at the earliest without any delay, and it is their own process and formality to recover the money from defaulter, and I can’t wait till that recovery. As when I called up to customer care team first time on Sunday ( 5th October, 2008 ) , then they confirmed me that they are well aware of that fraudulent activity done by that hacker because he has done with another customer accounts as well. But since Sunday morning no positive response received from the banker in regards to retrieval of my fund, and all are confirming me that once we recover that amount from defaulter then we will retrieve the same to you. But I would like to ask one more question that if Bank personals has added up beneficiaries without cross verification (which has been confirmed by customer care representative is not possible at all – but it is happened in my case), then where is my fault? Hence that money should get transfer back to my account without any delay. ”

I am a small person and all my saving and salary was in that account .I am not able to think how I will meet my basic needs and my other installments.

Now, I have launged a complaint against HDFC BANK representatives at the police station of NEW FRIENDS COLONY, NEW DELHI, through DD No. 22B, dated 08/10/08 at 3:20 PM.

It would be appreciated if this matter may taken at a serious note, so that i would be getting my money back into my saving account with your esteemed co-operation and efforts.

Aussie kid kills zoo animals, feeds them to a croc

BABY'S DAY OUT: In this CCTV image, the boy throws a turtle over a wall at the Alice Springs Reptile Center.

Australia: A 7-year-old boy broke into a popular Outback zoo, fed a string of animals to the resident crocodile and bashed several lizards to death with a rock, the zoo's director said Friday.

The 30-minute rampage, caught on the zoo's security camera, happened early Wednesday after the boy jumped a security fence at the Alice Springs Reptile Center in central Australia, said zoo director Rex Neindorf.

The child then went on a killing spree, bashing three lizards to death with a rock, including the zoo's beloved, 20-year-old goanna, which he then fed to "Terry," an 11-foot, 440-pound saltwater crocodile, said Neindorf.

The boy also fed several live animals to Terry by throwing them over the two fences surrounding the crocodile's enclosure, at one point climbing over the outer fence to get closer to the giant reptile.

In the footage, the boy's face remains largely blank, Neindorf said, adding: "It was like he was playing a game."

By the time he was done, 13 animals worth around $5,500 had been killed, including a turtle, bearded dragons and thorny devil lizards, Neindorf said. Although none were considered rare, some are difficult to replace, he said.

"We're horrified that anyone can do this and saddened by the age of the child," Neindorf said.

Alice Springs police said they are unable to press charges against the boy because of his age. Children under age 10 can't be charged with criminal offenses in the Northern Territory. His name was not released because of his age.

Neindorf said he plans to sue the boy's parents.

The boy's small size is probably the reason he didn't trip the zoo's security system, which relies on sensors to detect intruders, Neindorf said.

"I just want people to learn that they can't let their children go and run amok," Neindorf said. "If we can't put the blame onto the child, then someone has to accept the responsibility."

Woman slapped with fine for taking too long to eat at KFC

London: A British woman was left dumfounded when she was hit with a 150 pound fine for taking too long to eat at fast food giant KFC. A regular at KFC, Natalie Jackson had ordered a huge family bucket, which contained 14 chicken pieces, 6 French fry bags and large cokes. Jackson and a pal took an hour to scoff the 5,456-calorie feast. Days later Jackson was fined for breaking KFC’s 75-minute car parking limit. “It’s disgusting. I spend a lot of money in there. Now I’m never going back,” The Sun quoted Jackson, as saying. “It didn’t feel like I was in there all that long. We were hungry,” Jackson added. Natalie — who eats at KFC three times a week — complained to restaurant bosses that she was unaware of signs warning of the time limit in Huddersfield, West Yorks. Following the case, KFC has said that restaurant parking was contracted to private firm Civil Enforcement Ltd — but promised to review Natalie’s case. “A parking restriction was introduced to prevent non-KFC customers using the car park,” a spokesman for KFC said. “The 75-minute time limit is designed to accommodate our customers who generally eat for about 30 minutes,” the spokesman added.

Pak not a launch pad for terror attacks: Zardari

BREAKING NEWS

United Nations, Sep 26: President Asif Ali Zardari declared Pakistan has pledged its territory will not be used by extremist elements for launching terrorist attacks against neighbours and its own people.

Mr Zardari also made it clear that his government would "make sure Islamabad's friends did not violate the nation's sovereignty.'' ''Let it be clear to the terrorists lurking in their caves, plotting their next assault on humanity. If necessary, we will confront evil with force -- our police, our army and our air force,'' the Pakistani leader, who was sworn in earlier this month, told the UN General Assembly. "We will turn the power of the state against the stateless terrorists. We will turn the power of justice against the chaos of anarchists. We will turn the power of right against the darkness of evil,'' he added. In his address on Thursday, Sep 25 to the world body, Mr Zardari spoke on ensuring better relations with his country's eastern and western neighbours.

''We will continue the composite dialogue with India so that the outstanding issues are resolved. Whether it is the core issue of Jammu and Kashmir, or cooperation on water resources, India and Pakistan must accommodate each other' s concerns and interests,'' the President said.

''We must respect and work with each other to peacefully resolve our problems and build South Asia into a common market of trade and technology,'' he added.

Expanding the scope of his call, Mr Zardari said to the 192-member world body, ''Terrorists strike all nations and continents and there must be a line on their rampage. We must draw that line in Pakistan. In our stability lies the world's security.'' The Pakistani leader invoked his slain wife Benazir Bhutto and noted 'ours has been a bloody fight.' During his address, he put on the podium his wife's picture.

He referred to last week's Marriott Hotel bombing in Islamabad and said, ''Once again Pakistan has become a victim of terrorism.'' Thousands of Pakistani soldiers and civilians have died fighting terrorists, Mr Zardari said, adding, ''The world should stand along with us as we stand for the entire civilised world on the front lines of this struggle.''

Arjun Singh backs Jamia aid to terror suspects

BREAKING NEWS

New Delhi: Jamia University Vice Chancellor Mushir Ul Hasan is getting some support in his battle to provide legal aid to the students accused of being involved in terrorist activities.

Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh has come out in his support.

Hasan has been under fire from the BJP ever since he announced providing legal aid to Shakeel Ahmed and Zia Ul Rahman, the two students picked up by the Delhi police last week for their alleged involvement in the serial bombings in the Capital.

The Jamia Vice Chancellor went to meet the HRD minister at his residence to apprise him of all that’s been happening within the premises of Jamia University.

Incidentally, the Jamia University named its distance learning center after the HRD minister in May last year.

Also, as a gratitude for his grant of Rs 40 crore to the varsity, a road leading to the teachers residence complex was also renamed to Shahrah-i-Arjun Singh.

There are whispers in Parliament that the HRD Minister, who is involved in a tussle with the Minority Affairs Minister A R Antulay over minority institutions, wants to show the world who's boss.

J&K: Army jawan killed in gunbattle with militants on LoC

JAMMU: An Army jawan was killed in a fierce gunbattle on the LoC between Indian troops and militants, who entered the country under the cover of firing from Pakistani side, in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir.

"A group of armed militants entered the Indian territory from Kabaristan post of Pakistan and were trapped by troops close to Kalash Indian Post between Zeroline and border fencing along Line of Control in Poonch district today," defence officials said.

A jawan, Sepoy Chiba of One Assam Regiment died in the gunbattle which is still on, they said, adding that infiltration by militants followed the heavy cross-border firing on Indian positions along LoC since Saturday.

The encounter is taking place in a dense forest and "as it is a heavily mined area, we cannot cross to that side, thereby making the operation very difficult," they said.

Unconfirmed reports said that one militant has also been killed and his body is lying in the mined area.

Terrorists planned for 20 blasts in Delhi: Police

NEW DELHI: With the arrest of three more militants of the Indian Mujahideen allegedly involved in the serial blasts here, Delhi Police on Sunday claimed that the terror module was planning to explode at least 20 bombs in several places in the national capital, including Nehru Place.
The IM militants were planning to strike terror by exploding bombs in Nehru Place, a locality which houses several multi-storeyed buildings, and other parts of the capital, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) H G S Dhaliwal told reportersZia-ur-Rehman, Shakir Nishar and Mohammad Shakil were arrested early on Sunday morning from Jamia Nagar, the locality where two terrorists, including the "main man" Atif were killed in a gun battle with police on Friday.Police also arrested Abdul Rehman, the caretaker of Batla House where the terrorists were residing on charges of cheating and forgery. Rehman, the father of the arrested Zia allegedly forged the signature of the owner of the house. The encounter had taken place in that house.

During the interrogation of Mohd Saif and Zeeshan who were arrested on Friday, police claimed that they told investigators that Shakeel had planted the bomb in Gaffar market in Karol Bagh.

Dhaliwal said Zia and Shakeel planted bombs in the Maninagar area in the heart of Ahmedabad during the July 26 serial blasts.

The Delhi Police had on Saturday claimed that they have uncovered the conspiracy behind the attacks in the capital and in Jaipur and Ahmedabad saying they were carried out by terrorists of Indian Mujahideen and SIMI in league with Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Dhaliwal said, Shakil was a student of Jamia University where he was pursuing second year MA (Economics), while Zia was a student of third year BA in the same institution. Nishar was doing an MBA course through distant education mode from Sikkim Manipal University.

Zia provided logistics support to the group while Shakil was a ideologue who indoctrinated the other members and kept a watch on them in the absence of Atif.

"The terrorists planted bombs in the evening to cause maximum casualty," he said. They used to wrap the bombs in two polythene covers and was asked by mastermind Atif to put garbage in the polythene bags so that no body suspected them, he said.
The arrested militants had at least four years of association with Atif, who usually tells them "to do just what they are assigned to do and not ask questions about future plans", Dhaliwal said.

"The module used to get restless when blasts were not happening and Atif used to tell the members that there is a drought in the newspapers and we have to do something," he said.

Dhaliwal said the "general feeling" of the module was that "something should be happening continuosly" and there "should not be any vaccum" in their activities.

Atif never used to provide much details about funding and from where he got the explosives for carrying out blasts, the official added.

He also planned the minute details about the plan like whether the suspected bombers should shave or not, what kind of denim they should wear, Dhaliwal said, adding that they were always asked to place the bombs and depart from the location soon so that they could not be caught.

The module also immediately gather at their hideout soon after planting the bombs and were glued to the news channels.

"They even used to mock at each other and would compare the casualty of the blasts in localities where each of them planted bombs," Dhaliwal said.

Was Alina plain unlucky? The 'Ms Goody Two Shoes' was voted out of Bigg Boss 2 this week

The Bigg Boss 2 evictions have a way of throwing up surprises. Last week, Alina Wadiwala and Raja Chaudhary were nominated for evictions. While it was expected that Raja would be nominated some time in the early episodes of the show, the nomination of Alina Wadiwala by fellow housemates came as a real surprise.

Interestingly, Alina had been in the Dumping Zone for two weeks consecutively, having been nominated the week before last along with Ketki Dave, Zulfi Syed and . Apart from payal rohtagi Alina, Rahul Mahajan had also felt the heat of the Zone for two weeks – once with Rakhi Vijan and then with monica bedi . Both times, it was the female who was evicted and Rahul romped home safely.

While it was expected that Raja would be nominated some time in the early episodes of the show, the nomination of Alina Wadiwala by fellow housemates came as a real surprise.

Interestingly, Alina had been in the Dumping Zone for two weeks consecutively, having been nominated the week before last along with Ketki Dave, Zulfi Syed and payal rohtagi. Apart from Alina, Rahul Mahajan had also felt the heat of the Zone for two weeks – once with Rakhi Vijan and then with monica bedi . Both times, it was the female who was evicted and Rahul romped home safely.Alina had talked with all housemates as to why some of them had nominated her, when was nice to all and had not indulged in any bitching or backbiting so far. She confronted Sambhavana Seth and also shared her thoughts with Rahul Mahajan. In the earlier week though, she had apparently said certain things about for having nominated her.

But to her disappointment, Alina was shown the door. The housemate was a favourite with viewers, labelled 'too sweet'. It has come as a shock to Alina's newfound fans. At the same time, her detractors who'd labelled her as 'shrewd' have kind of had the last word.

The game probably would've been spoilt if Raja Chaudhary was evicted, as after being appointed Sarkar, his confidence had got a boost and he's currently flirting full on with payal rohtagi in front of Rahul's (supposedly her boyfriend) eyes.

Keep watching Bigg Boss 2 on Colors, every night at 10 pm IST, to see how Alina Wadiwala's eviction affects the other housemates.

Is techie Tauqeer India's Osama bin Laden?

New Delhi: Abdul Subhan Querishi alias Tauqeer is now being described as the Indian equivalent of Osama bin Laden.

Police say he is the techie brain of a terror group which is now emerging as the key link to the multiple bombings in Delhi.

Sources said Tauqeer and four of his associates had stayed with a man named Imran in Ahmedabad a few months before the blasts, where the plans of targeting Delhi were discussed first.

Sources also said Tauqeer shifted to another location after a few days and told Imran he was in the process giving a final shape to the Delhi plan.

A team of Delhi Police sleuths are closely questioning Imran, who was arrested soon after the Ahmedabad explosions.

Though the Ahmedabad crime branch released pictures of four suspects — Alamzeb Afridi, Mujeeb Jamilbhai Shiekh, Abdul Razzak and Qayamuddin — and said they were wanted for the July 26 serial blasts, they indicated their possible link to the Delhi explosions as well.

DCP Crime Abhay Chudasama said, "The pattern of blasts in Ahmedabad and Delhi blasts are the same. People behind the blasts could be of the same group. We are passing information to the Delhi Police."

While the police refused to disclose anything, there were enough indications of a connection between Saturday's bombings with the explosions in at least four other states over the past few months.

Sources confirmed to private channels crack investigators were conducting extensive searches in Azamgarh and surrounding areas of Uttar Pradesh, Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Mumbai.

The teams have also accessed interrogation reports of the suspects who have been arrested in previous blasts, with a central coordinating team in Delhi piecing together all the information.

Despite these specific leads, the Delhi Police, which had claimed "strong leads" on Sunday, downgraded its statement on Monday.

Delhi Police Commissioner, Yudhvir Singh Dadwal said on Monday, "The probe is on. We will not discuss anything."

Sources, however, said the investigations have so far indicated:

  • The bombers used public transport to reach each of the five blast sites
  • Local sleeper cells may not have been used in the Delhi operation
  • An eastern Uttar Pradesh module was given the task of planting the bombs
  • The eastern UP module had possible help from suspects based in adjoining districts like Faridabad and western UP
  • At least one suspect picked up so far could be significant to the case

Despite the stoic silence maintained by the investigators, sources confirmed a certain degree of consolidation of information had been achieved on Monday.

With over a dozen suspects having been picked up from Delhi and its adjoining areas, about 24 teams of the special anti-terror special cell were now carrying out searches, sifting through mobile phone records and compiling patterns based on interrogation reports of blast accused arrested in at least four states.
