Andhra, Karnataka reel under rain fury, 43 killed

COLLECTED BY: RISHI KAPOOR

Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are reeling under the impact of heavy rains. At least 43 people have been killed in Andhra Pradesh and thousands have been displaced as incessant rains lashed .

Six districts - Kurnool, Anantapur, Karimnagar, Warangal, Guntur and Prakasam - have been getting heavy rainfall for the past three days.

That’s due to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. Kurnool and Guntur districts account for seven deaths each.

Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy held a high-level meeting on Wednesday to review the situation.

The state government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs one lakh each to the families of those killed.

Rs 5.6 crore have also been released for carrying out immediate relief measures. As many as 29 relief camps have been set up.

In Karnataka too, rains have paralysed life.

At least 19 people are dead in heavy rains. Rivers are flowing above the danger mark in many districts.

The Bhima river in Belgaum has overflowed and flooded neighbouring areas. The Army has been rushed in for rescue operations in Gadag district, one of the worst affected.
